10 Tips for Getting a Baby to Sleep

Babies’ sleep patterns differ significantly from those of adults. Unlike adults, who typically have a single block of sleep at night, babies cycle between sleep and wakefulness throughout the day and night. This is because they have shorter sleep cycles, which means they wake more frequently.

Getting a baby to sleep can sometimes be challenging, but there are several tips that may help establish a soothing sleep routine:

1. Create a Consistent Sleep Routine

  • Establish a bedtime ritual: Activities like bathing, reading, or gentle singing can signal it’s time to wind down.
  • Stick to a schedule: Babies thrive on routine. Try to put your baby to sleep around the same time each night.

2. Set the Right Environment

  • Dark, quiet, and cool: A dimly lit, quiet, and slightly cool room (68–72°F or 20–22°C) promotes better sleep.
  • White noise: Some babies sleep better with soft background noise, such as a white noise machine or a fan.

3. Swaddle (for newborns)

  • Swaddling can make newborns feel secure, like they’re still in the womb. Use a light blanket to wrap them snugly, keeping their arms inside.

4. Use Soothing Techniques

  • Rocking, patting, or gentle bouncing: Gentle movements can help calm your baby and prepare them for sleep.

5. Watch for Sleep Cues

  • Look for signs that your baby is getting tired, such as rubbing eyes, yawning, or becoming fussy. Putting them down before they become overtired can help them settle more easily.

6. Avoid Overstimulation Before Bed
